• @alandhart As we come to the end of Tucson one of my highlights. A masterpiece. Often my breath is taken away, and this is no exception. This specimen was figured in the book “Ikons” and one of 76 specimens specimens figured and judged at that time (2007) to be “world-class” in terms of mineralogical significance, aesthetics, size, rarity, association and condition. A nearly flawless group of gemmy ‘hot-pink’ tourmaline crystals with mirror luster and sharp terminations perched on the side of a 13cm exceptionally sharp smoky quartz crystal. These two species just ‘love’ each other in this specimen 🙏🏼 - just look at those pristine terminations on the tourmaline and the complementing sharpness of the quartz, notwithstanding the way they sit together. It was collected close to 30 years ago from the Paprok area in the northern areas of Afghanistan, an area historically known for its incredible gem and mineral deposits. The mines in the towering Hindu Kush mountains are remote and inaccessible and ‘sit’ in one of the most geological dynamic regions of the world. Pegmatite rocks here vary in size from small to several kilometers long and occasionally soft, powdered clay filled pockets are encountered that sometimes produce the most magnificent specimens. February 16 2003 the world largest diamond heist occurred in Antwerp, Belgium. The group of 5 led by Italian Leonardo Notarbartolo rented an office in the near vicinity to this diamond centre for about 2 years prior so that he could a get a safety deposit box there as well as an I.D card for the building it was in. Amazingly the vault was able to be penetrated despite having a lock with 100 million combinations, infrared heat detectors, seismic sensor, Doppler radar and a magnetic field. Once in the vault@the thieves opened 123 of the 160 safety deposit boxes and stole diamonds, gold and jewellery worth more than an astonishing $100 million. Nortarbartolo was the prime suspect as he was the leader of the Italian group of thieves known as La Scuola Di Torino. D.N.A evidence found at the vault ( a half eaten salami sandwich) helped the police arrest Nortarbartolo for what he was sentenced to 10 years jail. Astonishingly most of the valuables stolen have not been recovered to this day.
