C is for Cub. This Piper J-3 Cub was parked in the most opportune location for a shot to capture the massive difference in scale with the C-17 Globemaster III that sat behind. The Cub might be the most recognizable Civilian light aircraft, due in part to the Chrome Yellow paint that you still see flying today. Even before the US entered WWII, the Cub served as the primary training aircraft of the Civilian Pilot Training Program. Some even served in the Civil Air Patrol once the US joined the war. Militarized Cubs were produced as the L-4 Grasshopper. The most famous of these L-4s was "Rosie the Rocketer", whose pilot, Maj. Charles "Bazooka Charlie" Carpenter, is credited with multiple tank and armored car kills.

The empennage, more commonly known as the tail of an aircraft, is what what provides pitch and yaw authority as well as aerodynamic stability. Sporting a "T" configuration, the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter has one of the most recognizable empennages. On rudder actuation, the tail is almost as aerodynamically effective as one of wings and would roll the whole aircraft. To account for this, the wings are canted downward to provide greater roll stability. I don’t photograph too many engagement sessions since I gave up taking wedding pictures 17 years ago, but the future bride in these is almost like family and I jumped at the chance since I can’t photograph her wedding.
